Abstract Fine Art Collage

Helen Becker is a contemporary collage artist. Becker’s fine art collage artworks are all unique creative pieces that tell an artistic story. Fine art collage artists who work in contemporary collage utilize a wide array of mixed media art materials to create artwork.

Helen Becker has studied under famous collage artists and has adapted her learned skills to her own unique artistic style. As a collage artist Becker focuses on working with artistic themes and direction as she moves through a series of collage art.

Helen Becker views being a collage artist as artistically liberating. Becker’s discovery of fine art collage has enabled her to pursue her artistic journey free of “material” constraints.

Contemporary Collage by a Fine Art Collage Artist

I define myself as a contemporary collage artist. As a collage artist, my paintings are grounded in something familiar to people - highways.  I began finding metaphors, then phrases, then words to name my paintings. They are all about highways, traveling, and motion. These three concepts are intertwined in my collage art and I hope these concepts are evident to viewers through my use of mixed media collage processes and materials.

I am amazed with super highways. Their interchange, with on and off ramps strategically placed, remove the confusion out of traveling. The five level junction, where multiple levels of highway spin and turn, looks like spaghetti noodles flung into the air. When following the course of the freeway, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to how they are built, one on top of the other. Yet highways work. It is this collage art-type of layering of asphalt, steel, and concrete on the road beds which interests me when I create an abstract mixed media collage painting.

Being a collage artist I paint my mixed media collage paintings the same way that highways are built - in layers.

I choose to create my mixed media collage pieces in acrylics. Acrylics are very versatile for the collage artist who wants to work quickly, yet still have the same feel and responsiveness like oil paints. Acrylic paint can be layered one on top of the other without waiting too long for the layers to dry. This means that layers of collage art materials can be placed and glued down easily and quickly.

As a result of this speed, it is easy to play more with the process of painting rather than keying in on the product (the art). The process allows me to put emotions into my mixed media collage paintings. The product, hopefully displays that emotion.
