Acrylic with Frayed Rope and Select Papers, 16” x 12”
Nerves get frazzled on a cloverleaf interchange. Even though it is one of the earliest designs in highway building, it is fraught with traveling imperfections. The frayed, frazzled, and unwound rope hanging from the on and off ramps in this painting attest to the feelings that are aroused in the weary traveler.
Traffic gets on and traffic gets off, in that order. That is the problem. It all happens too quickly. As one vehicle begins to accelerate when it enters the highway, another vehicle, in about the same place on the highway, is in the process of slowing down in order to exit. ARRGG! Two very different processes almost collide. Sometimes, unfortunately, they do collide.
Is there a parallel in life? Indeed. When one person is relating to life in a very positive way (getting on the highway), another person can come along (getting off the highway) and dash those feelings to bits. We all live precariously in that way. But it is good to remember that the best way through life is still on the highway. It’s still better than driving on ruts on a dirt road that can throw us to the ground at any moment.
